Selecting a GEO agency for complex B2B buying journeys

Buy a defined investigation and implementation process for AI-search visibility. Ask how the provider samples answers, checks citations and separates brand mentions from customer acquisition.

Test the whole buying committee

This guide is written for B2B revenue teams with a long sales cycle. Consider a B2B company trying to turn overseas interest into sales-accepted opportunities. An enquiry is not an opportunity. Sales must reject irrelevant geographies, unsuitable company sizes and unsupported use cases using recorded reasons; otherwise a higher lead count can conceal worse commercial fit.

A technical evaluator, budget owner and procurement reviewer may ask different questions about the same service. Build separate question groups and review whether the answers reflect the business accurately. A generic category recommendation does not answer integration or delivery concerns.

Ask the provider how it will use approved technical evidence without exposing confidential client information. Public explanations of scope and limitations can be useful; invented customer endorsements are not. Keep claims about compliance, integrations and performance under the appropriate internal review.

Represent the buying committee

Create separate questions for the technical evaluator, operational user and budget owner. Each role needs different evidence, and a generic recommendation may satisfy none of them. Ask the GEO provider to explain why each question belongs in the panel. Review whether the generated answer describes the service’s actual limitations and implementation requirements. A mention with an unsupported integration claim can create a poor sales conversation rather than useful demand.

Create a claims approval lane

Give the agency access to approved public explanations and a named reviewer for technical statements. Keep confidential customer details out of the content workflow. For each proposed change, identify the claim, supporting material and page where it belongs. Distinguish an agency’s editorial suggestion from a product fact that requires internal approval. This allows the team to improve useful evidence without inventing endorsements or overstating capability.

The working sequence

  1. Test the whole buying committee
  2. Represent the buying committee
  3. Create a claims approval lane
  4. Connect the pilot to sales enablement
  5. Review the next bounded decision

Move to the next stage when the evidence is usable, not simply because a calendar date has arrived.

Connect the pilot to sales enablement

Ask sales to review whether the improved pages answer questions that prospects actually raise. This is a separate check from sampled AI visibility. The same clear explanation may help a buyer arriving through several channels, so avoid assigning all subsequent interest to GEO. At renewal, review completed public evidence, sampled answer accuracy and attributable conversations independently. The provider should be able to explain what each observation supports and what it does not.

Define which AI-search surface matters

GEO is commonly used to describe work intended to improve how a business appears in generated answers. That label is not a specification. Ask which products, search modes, languages and buyer questions the proposal covers. An answer generated without web search and a search-grounded answer are different observations.

Google says its usual SEO best practices remain relevant for AI features in Search and that no special additional optimization is required. That does not mean every AI product behaves the same way. The provider should distinguish platform documentation from its own hypotheses and tell you what it can actually change.

Ask to see the measurement protocol

Before work starts, agree a panel of buyer questions with a business reason for inclusion. Save the exact question, platform, date, locale and relevant session conditions. Repeat observations instead of selecting a single favourable screenshot. Keep failed runs and unavailable answers in the log so the denominator is visible.

Score different outcomes separately: a brand mention, a linked citation, a useful recommendation and a factual error. A citation can point to another publisher rather than your own website. Ask who checks whether the answer is accurate and whether the link actually supports the statement made about your business.
